SHOE SZN

It’s time to kick into high gear with shoes!
If you’re not familiar with the Krewe of Muses, Mardi Gras, and special throws please allow me to explain.

Most every krewe that rides in a Mardi Gras parade has a special throw in addition to their purchased throws ( the beads, the stuffed animals, the coozies—the stuff that’s customized to each krewe). Our parade—the Krewe of Muses—special throw is glittered shoes. These have become quite a coveted item over the last two decades and our ladies spend a lot of time and money on these shoes. These are hand-decorated, hand-glittered, hand-embellished, one-of-a-kind sculptures when complete. And if you find yourself in someone’s house in New Orleans ( and probably elsewhere!) you might see such a shoe proudly displayed on a mantle. That’s because out of all the people at the parade and out of all the throws a person could catch, this would be one you’d save. And you’d remember right where you were when you caught it.

This time of year all over New Orleans there’s garages and studios—temporarily called ‘glitterages’ and ‘shoedios’—filled with women madly glittering shoes, burning their fingers with hot glue and sipping champagne. At this time of year everyone is covered in glitter. It doesn’t just wash off. It wears off. Just like carnival season itself.
